Self install is the new way to connect using ADSL broadband. If you want to know what ADSL is click here

Why choose self Install?
Self install gives you lower cost connection and access. It should also be quicker and easier

How much...

  • Connection fee (about £50)
  • Modem and 2 Splitters (microfilters) (about £135 incl VAT)
  • Monthly charge (£21 - £35 plus VAT per month)
  • Watch out...many providers charge much more for business use (about £50 plus vat) although some will let you go on a home user rate if you don't use put a business website on their webspace. If in doubt check.

Steps to connect

  1. Check if you are in a covered area. Click to find out . If either link comes up with an error try later.. it's run by BT.

  2. Pick an ADSL Internet Service Provider.
Like a normal ISP you should look for price,
fast reliable connections and access to reasonably priced human technical support.

Some well known names perform poorly so try to check ADSL guide for full listings, latest prices and some independent ratings.

  3. Order your connection. It should take about a week for your ISP to set you up for ADSL at your local exchange. They will confirm when it is ready.

If you order your modem before this confirmation you might then find you can't be connected.

  4. Now order your:

ADSL modem or other devices if you wish to connect to small networks. check ADSL guide or your ISP's website for recommended models.

    2 Splitters (microfilters)
. These plug in to your phone socket and separate your phone from your ADSL connection. Without it you may have trouble with interference on your phone line.

You should get 2 of these with your modem (or as many as there are phones connected to the same line as your ADSL connection).

  5. Install your modem and splitters. Like all new equipment this should be simple... just plug in and use follow the instructions. Otherwise this will be your opportunity to test out your ISP's technical support line.

  6. Remember.. with ADSL you are permanently connected to the web .. and accessible to hackers much more easily than a traditional dial up connection.. so a firewall to stop intrusions on your system is a must. There are software and hardware options.. check computer press for recomendations.
